On Crumbling Small Towns: Falmouth, Kentucky

Landscape Architecture & Community Planning - Planning & Analysis Projects

Project Narrative

This thesis entitled, On Crumbling Small Towns: Falmouth, Kentucky, speculates on the history and future of one small town in Kentucky called Falmouth. Falmouth is a city that has extensive damage from various floods, leaving its historic district in shambles. Through various methods of architectural representation this project is meant to capture a feeling that emulates what it feels like to be in a small town. That particular feeling of nostalgia, commodifying it, and recreating it is one conclusion made that could help save small towns, essentially through the idea of memory tourism. Through the various drawings you can see a story being told about the architecture within the town, and how some things may be rebuilt in the future. Without trying to create something entirely new within the old, this project proposes strengthening the urban core through repurposing abandoned buildings, rebuilding in respect to demolished historic buildings, and strengthening tourism and economy through a redesign of an important cultural event within the town.
