The Ribbon

Interior Architecture- Large Scale (>5,000 sf)

Project Narrative

Cincinnati Children's Hospital | The Ribbon

Renovation conceptualization for Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Campus 28,000 sq ft Cafeteria in Cincinnati, OH. This project aims to rethink cafeteria experience while simultaneously accommodating hospital user needs. Children are at the heart of a stressful environment, heavy with emotion, and trapped in sterile conditions. As a response, our design solution aims to create a neutral safe space away from hospital chaos, transporting users into an inviting environment imbued with subtle suggestions of playful privacy. Through the “ribbon” multiple levels of conversation, intimacy, and varying opacities unfold within the layers of the curve design. Utilizing interactive lighting, transformative seating, and the "curve" users are guided through the cafeteria with design intent promoting wayfinding strategy. Outside, users play amongst the tunnel, and take a moment of reprieve by the calming waterfall. Our end goal being to improve the quality of life for those frequently interacting with the hospital and address needs of the various user types, through renovation of the existing cafeteria.
