Building Architecture- Small Scale (<10,000 sf)

Project Narrative

This project began with a modest, traditional home situated along Lake Michigan. The client’s goal was ambitious: transform a small, three-bedroom house into a family retreat without overwhelming the neighborhood fabric. The solution was rooted in restraint, clarity, and a careful juxtaposition of old and new.

The design concept relied on a superimposed “box” that responded directly to the community’s setback requirements. Rather than appearing as a singular mass, the box was strategically carved, projected, and eroded through thoughtful manipulation of fenestration and form. These voids and shifts allowed glimpses of the original house to remain visible, creating a dialogue between the traditional structure and its bold new counterpart. The exterior finishes heightened the contrast: the existing home wrapped with white siding offset by dark metal siding that defines the addition.

Though modest in scale, only an eight-foot expansion to the west and two twelve-foot diagonal additions to the north and south, the impact was transformative. These surgical extensions doubled the home’s capacity, transforming it into a six-bedroom residence designed for multi-generational living. At the heart of the transformation is transparency: the main entry was reimagined as a glass threshold, offering direct views to the lake beyond. This visual connection draws visitors inward, linking the public entry sequence to the private family gathering spaces.

The structural strategy was equally deliberate. New steel beams were inserted into the existing wood framework to create an open space between rooms and enhance the flexibility of use. Rather than conceal these interventions, the design team chose to celebrate them. Exposed beams, painted black, provide a striking contrast to the home’s original wood construction. Much like the exterior’s interplay of metal and wood, the interior’s expression underscores the layering of history and modernity within one cohesive whole.

Ultimately, this project demonstrates how thoughtful, small-scale interventions can deliver outsized results. With less than 4,300 square feet, the home now embodies both intimacy and expansion, preserving a connection to its original form while embracing a contemporary architectural identity. The design strikes a balance between community constraints, family needs, and contextual sensitivity, resulting in a residence that feels both rooted and renewed.
