AES Corporation’s new Smart Operations Center utilizes data-driven technologies to optimize electric generation across the United States as the first of its kind in the country. This adaptive reuse project gives new life to a decommissioned 80’s building, infusing the program with dynamic social gathering and collaborative spaces (Pods) to enhance emerging thought and activate the innovation environment. The Smart Operations Center also consolidates additional company operations under one roof as it intensifies focus on data integration and smart grid technologies.
The interior aesthetic takes visual cues from the new graphic standards and color palette which was deployed company-wide. Branded graphics throughout the facility reinforce the company’s focus on innovative environments and tell the story of how the company is improving the lives of their customers both regionally and worldwide. The entry lobby space retains an open welcoming feel, while technology integration enables a secure environment housing the employees and high-end technology. To address the primary design questions of how to facilitate collaborative, innovative and social spaces; the design team adapted several of the existing large atrium spaces into “Innovation Pods”. Internally-lit vertical acrylic elements within each “pod” accentuate entry, as well as anchor touchdown areas for mobile staff. As an example, Pod 2 was activated by creating a large gathering space, new collaboration stair, digital hubs, and an innovation lab. This “Pod” approach results in a dramatic environment for increased interaction and showcases innovative technologies.
