Project Narrative

Carmelo’s is a dimly lit Italian restaurant designed to reimagine tradition for a contemporary audience. Its slogan, proudly etched across the front window, reads: “the most beloved tastes of the old world, reimagined for today.” The design embodies this ethos, weaving together once disjointed spaces with layers of structure and materiality laid bare to create a dining experience that feels both timeless and modern.

The existing space began as a soulless, placeless office interior - grey, flat, and pedestrian. Anonymous and unremarkable, it could have existed anywhere. The transformation is profound: what was once sterile has evolved into an environment layered with texture, narrative, history, and intimacy. Warmth and atmosphere now infuse the space, anchoring it in story and place.

Centric to the design is the idea of community - of gathering at the table with family and friends, as the Owner’s grandfather, Carmelo, once did in Sicily. The restaurant celebrates familiar “old-world” motifs while offering them in a refreshed, contemporary vocabulary. Mosaic tile floors and checkered patterns recall classic trattorias; exposed brick with peeling cement plaster (hidden behind the past office build) and floral wallpaper add tactility and charm; decorative lighting offers a soft glow that heightens the restaurant’s comfortable radiance.

The design is about exposé. Rather than concealing the building’s structure, the design reveals it. Layers of past finishes are celebrated, not erased. The kitchen, often concealed, now becomes part of the experience - its bustle and energy unfolding in plain view. Diners are drawn into the cadence of the kitchen, as though welcomed into Carmelo’s own home - to eat, drink, and stay awhile.

Throughout, bespoke details underscore the restaurant’s individuality. A heavy wood entry door, punctuated by a pill-shaped porthole, heightens the feeling of expectancy. A hall of arched portals, lined floor-to-ceiling with wine lockers and glassware, connects five distinct storefront rooms - inviting guests to “choose their own adventure” in the kitchen, parlor, dining room or bar. New cut window openings in the exposed masonry walls let the vibrancy of each room spill into the next, layering sights, sounds, and celebrations into a design that feels seamlessly connected.

The stylish design is immersive and memorable - a place where story, heritage, and contemporary craft entwine. Carmelo’s blends the warmth of old-world hospitality with the ease of modern dining, creating evenings as unique as the friendships and families who gather here.
