Constant Chorus – University of Cincinnati’s College of Design,
Architecture, Art, and Planning Design System

Experiential Graphics- Large scale (environments or systems)

Project Narrative

Constant Chorus is a comprehensive wayfinding and identity system designed for the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP). Drawing inspiration from the architectural language of the building itself, the project transforms spatial rhythms into a coherent visual experience—one that unifies multiple disciplines while honoring their individuality.
At the heart of the project is the idea of the different majors coming together to form a chorus of skill and talent. The system doesn’t impose itself on the building but responds to it, it visually harmonizes with its structure. A consistent, linear language became a guiding principle for the system. This linear motif, applied with intention across signage and graphics, acts as both a connector and a compositional tool, creating a rhythm that is felt as much as it is seen.
The system was developed through deep engagement with the building’s existing visual landscape, captured through a self-produced Visual Atlas. This document became a critical reference, allowing us to derive forms, patterns, and alignments that would become central to the new design language.
A modular kit of parts was created to express the individual character of each school and major within DAAP. These elements are flexible yet grounded in the system’s visual logic, allowing each discipline to be distinct without feeling disconnected. Bold colors provide a voice for each identity, while a minimal, monochromatic typographic system ensures clarity and consistency across applications.
The system serves as a guide. Present but not overpowering. It composes harmony from contrast and turns daily movement into meaningful interaction. Whether students are crossing disciplines or moving through spaces, the design supports and reflects their journeys.
This project is especially suited for recognition in categories such as Experiential Graphic Design or Wayfinding. It not only enhances functionality through clear navigation but elevates the user experience by embedding design into the very fabric of the place. It translates architectural form into graphic function.
Ultimately, Constant Chorus is about balance: a unified system that lets each voice be heard. It is a chorus of creative disciplines, each distinct, yet contributing to a shared identity—a design solution that speaks softly, clearly, and with lasting impact.
