Enhancing the Experience of the Purple People Bridge

The Purple People Bridge is currently fulfilling its purpose as a bridge but there is a lot more potential for signage, placemaking, and convenience of use. Through interviews, we know residents and tourists agree that it is an enjoyable location and want to see opportunities to spend more time using the bridge for recreation and leisure. But how can we improve the experience and personality of the Purple People Bridge for residents and tourists? Throughout the summer, we collaborated on iterative sketches, branding and color choices, size tests, and multiple critiques in order to create our Purple People Bridge Signage System. Featuring a large placemaking photo spot at the OH and KY entrances and an exciting new state boundary line experience, this system reflects the architecture of the bridge and makes use of the unique steel and black iron that give the bridge its personality. And of course, the signs are incredibly purple.
