I-275 + Kellogg Avenue Interchange Beautification

Landscape Architecture & Community Planning – Implementation

Project Narrative

The Kellogg Avenue and I-275 Interchange Beautification project in Cincinnati, Ohio is a landmark achievement, setting a national standard for innovative interchange infield design. This project transformed an underutilized, ecologically depleted area into a visually striking gateway that welcomes nearly 1 million people weekly. The design team played a pivotal role in executing this vision, serving as a model for communities nationwide, blending sustainability, art, and cutting-edge engineering.
Anderson and Cincinnati envisioned a gateway that would welcome visitors and honor the area’s heritage. The landscape architect responded with a plan that integrates elements from the area’s historical orchards and the Ohio River. Linear rows of plantings evoke the orchards that once lined the riverbanks, while sweeping hardscape and softscape curves mimic the flowing river. This thoughtful design anchors the area in its historical context and introduces a fresh aesthetic, redefining infields as cultural landmarks.
Sustainability was at the heart of the project, accomplished through the use of native and drought-tolerant plantings that require minimal upkeep and promoting biodiversity. A central loop of wildflowers attracts birds and pollinators, fostering a vibrant ecosystem amidst a highly trafficked area. Despite the challenges of being in a floodplain and ODOT’s height restriction of 18 inches for mature plants, the landscape architects chose species that thrive in these conditions. This eco-conscious approach not only enhances the interchange’s visual appeal but also supports Anderson’s environmental goals, creating a resilient, thriving space.
At the heart of the design is a 200’ long solar-powered signage wall, prominently showcasing Anderson and Cincinnati, with backlit letters that bring the signage to life. Programmable underpass lighting illuminates the space day and night with customizable displays for events and holidays as ‘underpass art.’ These innovative features elevate the infield and embody the community's forward-thinking mindset.
Most notably, the landscape architects and engineers developed an innovative stormwater management curb and gutter detail. This solution was engineered specifically to handle stormwater runoff on the steep slopes of the infield, while integrating seamlessly into the overall design. ODOT adopted this innovation as a new standard, setting a statewide precedent for stormwater solutions. This highlights the design team’s ability to merge aesthetics with engineering, ensuring that the project is both visually stunning and functionally sound.
The Kellogg Avenue and I-275 Interchange Beautification project is a leader in community gateway design. By blending cultural history, sustainability, technological innovation, and engineering excellence, the design team has helped create a space that not only welcomes residents and visitors but also sets a new benchmark for future interchange projects nationwide.
