Test Radiation Memorial – Marking a Journey Through Time

Landscape Architecture & Community Planning – Implementation

Project Narrative

The Memorial Park serves as a tranquil sanctuary for contemplation and remembrance of those impacted by radiation testing from 1960 to 1972, capturing the enigma of a tragedy whose full extent remains unknown. Situated on the sunny east side, the below-grade park features stainless steel elements rising from the ground, symbolizing the enduring strength of the victims and inviting exploration. Inspired by African Kilim motifs, the design acknowledges that over 62 percent of the victims were African American. Meandering pathways guide visitors through four distinct spaces, each artistically conveying the victims' stories. The park stands as a poignant tribute, fostering deeper appreciation and respect for the past, while offering a reflective and healing experience for all who visit.

Legacy Passage Zone
Upon entering the park, visitors encounter a memorial wall displaying the names of the victims, with some lines left blank to signify the unknown identities of some. As they follow the path, they arrive at the Past Zone, where motifs adorn the walls, inviting tactile engagement.

Waters of Remembrance
In the "Waters of Remembrance" zone, visitors are surrounded by a sensory experience where water and stainless steel converge. A 360-degree path invites guests to walk among integrated broken elements, symbolizing resilience and reflection. Water gently cascades into the pools, creating a serene soundscape, harmonizing with bird songs, and fostering an atmosphere of contemplation and remembrance.

Enlightenment Hub
The journey continues to the Enlightenment Hub, where winding paths lead visitors to the Present Zone. Reflecting the victims' lack of awareness about the radiation tests, the hub features rotatable elements that encourage discovery. One side of these elements is made of reflective stainless steel, mirroring the natural surroundings. In contrast, the other side contains interactive LCD screens offering insights into the latest advancements in radiation treatment. This technology allows continuous updates, ensuring the information remains relevant and responsive to the community's evolving needs.

Horizon Vista Zone
Ascending the Stairs of Hope, visitors emerge into the Horizon Vista Zone symbolizing the future. Lush trees and semi-porous plants allow light to filter through, emphasizing transparency—a goal for the future in contrast to the secrecy surrounding the tragedy. From this vantage point, visitors gain a new perspective on the below-grade memorial spaces, underscoring the importance of remembrance, education, and hope in shaping a brighter future.
