Miamisburg Riverfront Park

Landscape Architecture & Community Planning – Implementation

Project Narrative

The revitalization of Riverfront Park in Miamisburg, Ohio, tells a powerful story of community transformation, environmental stewardship, and urban renewal. Fervent collaboration between the City and landscape architects resulted in two visionary ideas that were crucial to the success of the project: the removal of an existing road that created a physical barrier to the Great Miami River and extensive regrading efforts to open views that were otherwise blocked. By creating an inclusive, vibrant public space, the project transformed 7.5 acres of the city’s riverfront—an area that had long been underutilized and historically underserved.
Miamisburg’s downtown, long in need of renewal, is now experiencing a resurgence, largely due to the park’s revitalization. Riverfront Park has become a central gathering place, reconnecting residents and visitors with the riverfront. The design team brought a 20-year vision to life by turning the park into a thriving and essential community hub through sustainable design, family-friendly features, and ample green space.
The park caters to an array of recreational pursuits and includes a 7,600-square-foot playground desperately needed by the community, splash pads, swinging benches, picnic areas, and recreational trails. These features create accessible, enjoyable spaces for all ages. Whether enjoying lunch, walking the trails, or attending events at the new amphitheater, the park offers something for everyone. With ping-pong tables, a pavilion, and ample parking—fulfilling a significant community request—the park supports various activities, drawing locals and visitors into the heart of downtown.
The scenic bike path was realigned to facilitate smooth access between the community, riverfront, and park. The bike path welcomes visitors from across the region into downtown, acting as the community's front door. Collaboration with the Miami Conservancy District (MCD) ensured that the renovation of the levee not only improved safety but also strengthened it.
Beyond the physical transformation, Riverfront Park has become a catalyst for economic development. Since its reopening, downtown Miamisburg has seen increased foot traffic, new businesses emerging, and long-standing establishments benefiting from the influx of visitors. The park serves as a "new front door" for the community, inviting people into a revitalized downtown and reinforcing Miamisburg’s identity as a destination for recreation, culture, and commerce.
The design team’s approach demonstrates a deep commitment to community-focused design and sustainable urban planning. Through extensive community engagement, surveys, and demographic and recreation trends analysis, the landscape architects worked closely with residents of all ages and abilities to ensure the design reflected their aspirations. This thorough engagement ensured that the park would meet the diverse needs of Miamisburg and create a space that will have a lasting impact on the city’s future.
