Commissioned by the Cincinnati Reds as an extension of their recently renovated Hall of Fame, the design team developed a new free-standing structure to provide a public face for the existing Hall Of Fame retail space. The Reds Hall of Fame Merchandise Store provides a contemporary iconic presence to the front gates of the Great American Ballpark. As the first ever professional baseball team, the Reds have an immense history to tell. This hall of fame museum is the largest baseball HOF in the country. Fans now can access the legacy of the Hall of Fame directly in the fan zone area. This new building, nestled into a previously unused area of the plaza, now allows for easy daily set-up before games and brings more efficiency to retail operations for the museum. The design utilizes reclaimed materials including the overhead glass door as well as steel and glass from the existing stadium. The design alludes to The Big Red Machine, the old baseball clubhouse and the architectural typology of a baseball dugout. The retail fixtures are made of thrifted and antique pieces, and the wood ceiling utilizes the technology of Thermory Ash, a material that will never warp, rot or fade. Not only does this new retail space intrigue and inspire Cincinnati Baseball fans, it has helped to create an instantly recognizable feature at the entrance to an otherwise aging ballpark. And after one season, sales from the new store have paid for the project.
